Why Weed Affects Everyone Differently

Same Cannabis Different Reactions

One of the most common things we hear at the counter: “My friend smoked the same thing I did and was totally fine. I was glued to the couch for three hours. What gives?” Different people, same flower, completely different experience. It’s not random and it’s not in your head. A bunch of factors determine how cannabis hits any given person on any given day. Most of them are biological, some are situational. Here’s what’s actually going on.

Want help picking something that fits how you respond to cannabis? Stop into a Cannabis & Glass, or stop in and the Cannabis & Glass budtenders will ask the right questions and match you with something that fits.

Your Endocannabinoid System Is Unique

Unique Responses to Cannabis

Everyone has an endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors that cannabinoids like THC and CBD interact with. The number and sensitivity of those receptors varies person to person. Some people have a system that responds strongly to THC at low doses. Others need significantly more to feel the same effect. This isn’t something you can change. It’s basically how you’re wired. Two people with very different ECS sensitivities can take identical doses and have completely different experiences.

Will CBD change how THC affects me? Sometimes. Some people find a small amount of CBD takes the edge off intense THC effects. Others don’t notice a difference. Worth experimenting if you’re prone to overdoing it.

Tolerance Is the Other Big One

Regular cannabis users build tolerance. Receptors downregulate, the same dose hits less hard. Someone who smokes daily can take a dose that would put a non-user on the couch and barely feel it. Tolerance is real and it’s the single biggest reason your “lightweight” friend reacts to less than you do (assuming you’re the regular user). Tolerance breaks come back. A two to three week break drops most people back to near-baseline sensitivity. That’s why your first session after a vacation can hit differently.

Why does the same strain hit me differently on different days? Sleep, hydration, food intake, stress level, and time since your last session all factor in. Day-to-day variability is normal.

Why does my friend need way more than me to get high? Tolerance is usually the main reason, plus baseline ECS sensitivity. Both are individual.

Can I lower my tolerance? Yes. A two to three week break drops most users back close to baseline. Some people do a few days mid-month to keep things in check.

Are some people just not affected by cannabis? Rare, but yes. A small percentage of people have ECS variations that make THC barely register. More commonly, “I don’t feel anything” comes down to dose, format, or onset window.

Body Chemistry and Metabolism

How quickly your liver processes THC matters a lot, especially with edibles. Fast metabolizers feel onset quicker and the effect doesn’t last as long. Slow metabolizers wait longer for onset but ride the effect longer too. Body fat factors in because THC is fat-soluble. It binds to fat cells and releases slowly. For some people this extends the effect; for others it produces less noticeable peaks.

What You Ate (and When)

Empty stomach: faster onset, often stronger peak. Full stomach: slower onset, more drawn-out effect. With edibles especially, having recently eaten a big meal can push onset from 60 minutes to 2+ hours.

The Strain Itself

Same THC%, different terpene profile, different experience. Two flowers both at 22% THC can produce noticeably different feels because the supporting cast (terpenes, minor cannabinoids) changes the character. This is part of why people develop preferences for specific strains rather than just chasing high THC numbers.

Set and Setting

Your mental state going in matters. Stressed, anxious, or tired before you consume, and you’re more likely to amplify those feelings. Relaxed and in a good environment, you’re more likely to have a smooth experience. Same dose, different baseline, different outcome.

Stop By and Tell Us How You Respond

If cannabis hits you harder or lighter than the people you smoke with, that’s useful information. Tell us at the counter and we’ll point you at the right starting dose and strain type. We do this all day.
